Over the decades of my writing career, I often wished there had been a college program for novelists that could have prepared me for what it would take to be a full-time writer. It was intense–and I mean intense–to learn everything I needed to know along the way. Let me just say, I made a lot of mistakes on the journey as well.
I've had thousands upon thousands of young readers/writers that have written to me–or come to one of my writing workshops over the years–asking for guidance. What should they study, what's the best path to take, how on earth do they tackle this massive undertaking?
It is with great joy that I now have the answer. The Author Conservatory. When I heard about their program, I cheered. A couple years later, I was asked to join their faculty. It is a huge honor and privilege to be a part of this incredible team and have the opportunity to pour into the next generation of writers. I’m thrilled to let my readers know about this amazing conservatory. Read on to find out more about what The Author Conservatory provides and how to apply!
The Author Conservatory is a Christ-centered, three year college-alternative program that trains novelists in the writing and business skills they need for a long-term writing career. The program follows an apprenticeship model, which means that students are personally mentored by professional authors, editors, and entrepreneurs to hone the skills they need to pursue their dreams.
A conservatory model may not be as common as the college model today. But the idea of it actually dates back to the 16th century. Instead of taking classes in a broad range of disciplines, students in a conservatory take classes exclusively focused on the craft & business skills needed for their future career. You may be most likely to have heard of the concept with regards to music conservatories like Julliard School of the Arts or the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
In the past, conservatories only existed for the visual & performing arts. The Conservatory has innovated this time-tested model by creating one for writers.
If you’re in your teens or twenties, realize that a traditional college degree won’t give you the kind of writing training you’re looking for, and would like to be in an online apprenticeship program where you learn the skills you actually need to build a writing career, here’s what you can expect in the Author Conservatory:

- You’ll launch a profitable entrepreneurial venture and learn tools for building a business around your writing.
- You’ll become part of a network of writing peers and professional industry connections to support your career.
- And you’ll graduate with the tools you need to pursue publication and earn money as an entrepreneur.
