The Making of a Cover

A fun little fact about my books that readers often don’t know, is that I am the model for my book covers! As an indie author, it’s often difficult to find quality 18th century art/photography that is true to the era—or that doesn’t cost a fortune. *HAHA* So, I figure—why not have fun creating exactly the cover I want, by choosing the dress and modeling it myself!?

For every book there is a new gown and a new hair color. (Wigs are fun, too!) I guess I never really grew up. *hehe* Playing dress-up is so much fun. Most of my gowns are from Colonial Williamsburg, though I did purchase one from Etsy, as well. They are true to the era and exquisitely made.

Thankfully, for the shoot for So Bright a Hope, the weather was exquisite. It made for wonderful lighting and beautiful scenery. There have been times (like the shoot for book three, So Rare a Gift) that we shot in freezing cold temperatures and it was hard to disguise my red-cold fingers! The shoot for book two (So True a Love) was windy, and we had to take lots of shots in hopes of finding one where my hair wasn’t going absolutely crazy.

Why not shoot inside instead of outside? Well, good question. We just don’t, I guess. It provides the best light and adds a lovely hint of color in the background.

For book five, I purchased a lovely floral gown from CW and I couldn’t wait to wear it—complete with panniers and a downy neckcloth. I also knew I wanted to include a pink accent color (hence the flowers) and I was ecstatic about the way the photos turned out. However, the only problem was, there were so many good ones, it was difficult to choose!

Here are some we debated over—pictured below. We looked at the other covers, my positioning etc, to make sure we didn’t duplicate something we’d already done, before finally deciding on a winner.

My fourth cover, So Pure a Heart was set in winter, and I knew I wanted to end the series with a colorful Spring-themed look. We debated what background/lower photo to use and found the perfect one, then went straight to work.

It came together very quickly with minimal tweaking. We were so pleased with the results. What do you think? Do you feel like this last cover fits with the rest of the series? I hope so!

Thank you so much and happy hunting!

Amber Lynn Perry
