“He is No Fool…”

It’s pretty easy to be shallow and self-absorbed in the society in which we live. Unfortunately, we live in the “entitlement” era.
But for just a moment, I want you to think about all that you have… No matter if you are a CEO or unemployed–think about how MUCH you have. (Don’t think about all you DON’T have, or all that you want, or all the bills you need to pay – think about what you have. Look around you.)
I’m betting it’s a lot more than absolutely nothing.

Which is what you will be taking with you when you die. Absolutely NOTHING.

So what’s of eternal value? Think about it…

I’ve been studying missionary/martyr Jim Elliot’s life (many know the gist of his story, but there’s SO much more to it) and while still a student in college, he wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Wow. Powerful. Jim gave up numerous careers he could have pursued (and he was a very talented young man!), He gave up a life of comfort, gave up so much that we take for granted day in and day out. But oh, so much more that? He gave up his life for the Lord’s work – gave it up for the Lord’s will – because He loved God more than anything. And the results of that are still growing.

This world…this life… it’s all temporary.

How many of us would be willing to do the same? To give up everything to tell someone about the One and Only Way – Jesus Christ.

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

  1. Wow, it is such a powerful story, impacting an entire generation for the Lord and for missions. Jim’s story must be told now to a new generation.

Lynn McCallum » I so agree! We definitely don’t want this story lost to the future generation. I would recommend Through Gates of Splendor and Shadow of the Almighty (both by Elisabeth Elliot – his wife) that give the beautiful full story to every Christian.
